What does the term resilience mean and why do we want our children to be comfortable and understand it, why is it so important? The meaning of the word resilience is to withstand or to recover quickly. The ability to return quickly after something bad has happened. Why do trauma researchers emphasize that resilience is a necessary skill? Having the skills and learning how to be resilient does assist and is of great importance when facing tough times, that is why.
There are four types of resilience, physical, mental, emotional, and social. We must practice and cultivate all 4 types to support ourselves during difficult times. Each are deserving of the practice. With physical resilience we need to exercise, self-care and practice healthy habits. With mental resilience we need to practice acceptance and engage in valued activities that offer us the feelings of pride and worth for ourselves and community. Emotional resilience through building positive thinking about ourselves and the world around us. Lastly, social resilience through building social connections around us, we are not islands we need to be connected.
One of the best ways to build resilience is through our parenting style, we have to encourage our children to understand that yes, sometimes life is not fair. I am not a proponent of not telling a child the score of the hockey game, always saying that we are winners because this practice is not how we learn resilience. Where is the building the toughness and accepting failure in always winning or void of information? We do learn from failure, we gain valuable insights and knowledge, which we can use to improve future decisions and our actions. Ultimately leading to better outcomes and personal growth. I think that we must rethink some of the parenting styles and offer opportunity for our children to grow.
