Depression, schizophrenia, and ADHD are umbrella terms that encompass disorders with widely differing brain chemistries and symptoms. These conditions often have “ripple” effect” on families, creating tension, uncertainty, stress and can change how people live their lives. Different members and different families are likely affected in different ways.
The term “well-being” is often used as an alternative to the words mental health. I like the term better because it indicates both mind and body, I think that this is important to understand because there is such a connection between the mind and body. Just like there is a connection between members in a family. When a member of a family is not well than this changes the patterns of interaction with other members, roles, relationships and shapes interactions between members. This can present in frustration or emotional disruption.
Family members rely on each other for emotional, physical, and economic support. Family can be the primary sources of relationship security or relationship stress. Disorders can run in families, toxic dynamic such as boundaries not respected, controlling behaviour, or struggles with untreated addictions, harmful or destructive behaviours. If there is genetic factors or learned behaviour either or both it all can be very painful for those experiencing it.
Families can acknowledge collectively that change needs happen. Even if only one member has received a diagnosis it is more effective that the family heals together and collectively. Helping but not controlling, recognizing that there are things everyone could make changes in. Finding patience, having faith and letting go of the fear of the future are all helpful changes that only take thought and putting the changed thinking into practice.
