The myth about probiotics!  Have you ever walked into a store and tried to figure out which probiotic, what billion of what strain is the correct dose or what about those that are in the fridge and those that are on the shelf.  Tough decision without the facts and understanding that not all probiotics are created equal.

There is 70-80% of all immune cells found in your gut microbiota, the health integrity of your digestive system is vital.  If there is a bacteria imbalance then your intestinal flora cannot properly protect you, leaving you more vulnerable.  Your bacteria act as a barrier, preventing foreign bodies from penetrating your system, the bacteria secrete beneficial vitamins and enzymes that help break down food, making it easier to absorb nutrients, the bacteria help increase the population of beneficial bacteria and maintain balance.

Look for these 5 points when purchasing a probiotic 1) Identified high quality strains stated on the package 2) Have the strains been clinically tested together in the finished product? This is called synergy of the strains 3) Guaranteed bio activity until the expiration date 4) Indication that human studies show that the strain can improve human health 5) Delayed release so that the bacteria can survive the stomach acid.

There are 30,000 named strains of bacteria, and at least 8,000 have been found in the human microbiome.  That’s a lot of potential combinations.  It is a myth that the more CFU’s (number of alive and active microorganisms) the better, when choosing aim for at least 10 billion-20 billion CFU’s in the supplement.  Note that this number of CFU’s goes down over time, so the longer it is sitting on a supermarket shelf, the lower the actual number will be.  Probiotics are a live microorganism. In general, most have the strains Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.  Lactobacillus has been shown to improve lactose intolerance, prevent and treat cancer, regulate immunity and improve gastrointestinal diseases.  Bifidobacterium helps prevent infections and produce important compounds such as B vitamins and healthy fatty acids.  Both strains are good to take for overall health support.
