So, we are learning how to shop, learning how to set up the pantry and all things good to better our health. Eating organic is important as we avoid chemicals that have a history of harm, and now try changing to consuming “whole foods” that have not been processed, the foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds. We need to minimize the exposure to pesticide residues so buying organic assists with reducing the exposure.
Organic means that the food has been farmed in a way that replenishes and maintains soil fertility without using toxins, synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. In Canada for someone to declare and label a product organic they have to be certified through the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) which is an arm of the federal government, although it relies on a smaller third-party agencies regarding compliance.
In Canada, according to the government website, the use of the “organic logo” is only permitted on products with 95% or more organic content that have been certified according to the requirements of the Canada Organic Regime. What is the “Canada Organic Regime” you might want to know, in Canada for any product to have an organic label the land has to have been chemical free for minimum of 12 months prior to planting the crop to be harvested and prohibited products have to have been removed for 36 months prior to the first crop. The crops are inspected and audited.
Organic meat has even more standards that include the feed and care of the animal. Everything that is used for the animals care including bedding has to meet a standard. I have to say that I am very respectful to organic farmers and the care they provide to our food and to the earth. I appreciate all that you do!
