Honestly, I would like to be around the conference table when things related to mental health get a name. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), really? I have had many conversations with kids when they are so deflated, “I have a disorder they will say.” I tell them hog wash! Don’t listen to that talk, you are awesome and have so many talents, you are a superhero. I then watch them inflate and feel better about themselves.
The label should be Awesome Spectrum. I agree that it is a spectrum but totally disagree that it is a disorder. I love the way ASD see the universe, their minds work in such a unique way, I find conversations so engaging. They are super sensitive, and most are very aware that they can have some quirky social moves which can make them shy and overthink that they might make a social mistake. Work as a therapist can include helping them to find courage to be social by bringing out their social awareness. Super and awesome people.
There are some interesting facts about Autism like; it affects 1 in 36 children, boys are nearly 5 times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with ASD, but that doesn’t mean that that it doesn’t effect girls, they go often undiagnosed within the school system and it is the fastest growing disorder in the North America!
I agree that they may have different ways of learning, moving or paying attention, but if it is the fastest growing, then is it a disorder or the future norm. Just a thought!
