Copper is a mineral that you need to stay healthy. Your body uses copper to carry out many important functions, including making energy, connective tissue, and blood vessels. Copper also helps maintain the nervous and immune systems and activates genes. Your body also needs copper for brain development. Copper interacts with Vitamin C, iron and manganese.
Zinc is needed for the body’s defensive (immune) system to properly work. It plays a role in cell division, cell growth, wound healing, and the breakdown of carbohydrates. Zinc is also needed for the senses of smell and taste.
According to 40-year research by Walsh Institute, ADHD and Behaviours Disorders can be from a disrupted individual biochemistry. Zinc levels and elevated copper can contribute to the ADHD and Behaviours Disorders. Copper effects the synthesis of Norepinephrine which is neurotransmitter of the brain that plays an essential role in the regulation of arousal, attention, cognitive function, and stress reactions. Copper also affects dopamine, if you have high copper than you will have low dopamine. Think about this, Ritalin, a common medication prescribed for ADHD raises dopamine.
Why am I detailing this? Copper and Zinc have a strong relationship. Too much of one can cause a deficiency in the other. If you take zinc, including zinc in a multivitamin, you should also take copper. There needs to be a balance of both, violent tempers, extremes mood changes can be copper overload. This can be from a zinc deficiency.
Think of the body as a perfect machine, everything runs in balance, knock out one piece and the reaction can be like a domino effect. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to understanding the connection between mind and body.
