Minerals are defined as those elements on the earth and thus found in foods that our bodies need to develop and function normally.  Those essential for health include, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride, magnesium, iron, zinc, iodine, chromosomes, copper, fluoride, molybdenum, manganese’s, and selenium. What does this have to do with mental health?

Minerals fulfil a wide variety of functions, such as building materials for our bones, influencing muscle and nerve function, and regulating the bodies water balance. They are also components of hormones and enzymes and other biologically active compounds.  Some minerals play a role in the optimal function of the immune system.  They can influence susceptibility to infections, but also effects on the development of chronic diseases.

For most individuals, a balanced diet is sufficient in obtaining amounts of vital minerals.  However, farming practices and a large percentage of the populations diet leaves them at risk of mineral deficiency.  But, also athletes, older people, vegetarian or vegan diets, pregnancy can all be at risk for mineral deficiency if they eat a one-sided or reduced diet.  Minerals can play a role in your mental health as well, Copper, Zinc and Magnesium are specifically important in your mental health.

If people have the knowledge about minerals and their importance, in addition to the corresponding food that contain such minerals plus, understanding farming practices, organic versus mass produced practices.  Then adjustments can be made to maintain a balance.  Being informed is always a good practice.
