Internal Family Systems – Works!

IFS spelled out on wooden pieces.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of therapeutic practice that I have been trained on and use extensively in my practice.  The theory is that every person has a a protective and inner wounded parts that are led by the core Self.

The model provides a framework for understanding the complex mosaic of parts within an individual psyche.  These parts are categorized into three groups 1) managers, 2) firefighters, and exiles.  Each of these have a distinct role and functions within the individual’s internal system.

At the heart of the internal family systems model are several core concepts that articulate the nature and function of the psyche’s inner parts.  This model recognizes that the mind contains myriad parts, often operating in harmony but sometimes in conflict.  These parts are managed by the Self, which is the central guiding element characterized by its leadership qualities.

The model is designed to foster understanding and harmony among these parts, which the ultimate goal of achieving Self-leadership.  This leads to the emotional healing and growth of the individual.  In my practice I have found great success with IFS in a client suffering from trauma, after some time the client feels that they are on the journey to healing.  The interesting thing is clients do not have to buy into the theory, and some feel funny talking to a hurt part, but the healing still occurs.
