The Inside Job of Methylation

Methylation plays a critical role in the body and has an impact on mental health.  The symptoms of poor methylation are gut, dysbiosis, Thyroid dysfunction, trouble sleeping especially reaching the REM phase, anxiety depression, heart problems and addictions.

The body broadly has two forms of methylation classified as DNA methylation and histone methylation.  In summary, methylation is a versatile process that plays a crucial role in regulating gene expression through modifications of both the DNA and histone proteins.

More and more research is suggesting that there is growing evident that DNA methylation plays a critical role in brain function, including neurogenesis (how neurons are formed in the brain), neuronal differentiation (regulated process that shapes the development and function of the nervous system), synaptogenesis (formation of synapses, the points of contact where information is transmitted) all of these processes will have an effect on learning and memory.

Supplements for enhancing methylation include, folic acid (plays a critical role in methylation), betaine, methionine, choline, and vitamins B12, B6, and B2.  Restoring methylation through supplementation of magnesium, zinc and proteins that are high in glutathione precursors such as dark leafy greens. Research has shown that high dietary vitamin D intake is associated with lower methylation.

MTHFR (Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase) is a genetic mutation that interferes with the bodies methylation process.  This is linked to ADD, ADHD, autism, anxiety and depression due to the interference with neurotransmission and the bodies detoxing abilities.
