Methylation is all about the body detoxing. This is an important function of the body and very necessary for optimum performance. Otherwise, all things in the body get sluggish, like neurotransmitters and functions in general. Increased inflammation and brain fog starts to kick in and make life difficult. What are the signs if you have poor methylation; hormonal imbalances, PCOS, PMS, Fibroids Endometriosis, infertility (both male and female) and cardiovascular disease such as high blood pressure or poor circulation.
There is a Methylation and Epigenetic link. This means an heritable change in gene expression that occurs without altering DNA. These changes can be influenced by environmental factors or even passed down to future generations. One such genetic mutation is MTHFR (Methyltetrahydrofolate reductase). A simple way to understand this is to imagine your DNA as a cookbook and your genes are the recipes. Genetics is like studying the actual words and ingredients in those recipes/. Epigenetic’s is like having sticky notes on the cookbook that tell your cells which recipes to use or ignore, without changing the recipes themselves. These sticky notes can be influenced by your environment and can even be handed over to your children.
Two cycles for Methylation are Folic Acid and Methionine. Each playing a role in the methylation cycle. While doing research I discovered that the feelings of self-worth can be interconnected with methylation. This is because methylation is connected to brain health, production of serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline and changes in these can present as depression, anxiety and even schizophrenia but also feelings of self-worth.
