Highly Sensitive Meaning

On and off I hear the term “Highly Sensitive” but what does highly sensitive really mean? In Blog 131 it was discussed how some individuals are avoiders, and some people are seekers when it comes to external stimulation. This is because some individuals are sensitive to stimuli. The term highly sensitive can bring about shame or guilt. For parents there can be frustration partly because of lack of understanding but also because we all have such busy schedules and coping with other sensitivities can frustratingly knock you off your path. I mean what does “you’re too sensitive really mean?” Other than someone feeling like they are not up to the normal standards of desensitized people.  Accepting that some of us simply cannot take on too much stimulation might help others realize how much we really do take on as far as noise, smells, and other stimuli.

It can be taken as a positive where we can think about the moment to be present and let go of the worry about “to do lists” that are currently occupying our minds. Taking the moment to understand your child’s needs, being present to understand another’s needs with empathy and compassion. That can be a beautiful time for everybody.

Letting go of the term shame, guilt and frustration and replacing it with an understanding, compassionate and learning about uniqueness.
