Scents are in many products we use in our households, most commercials are encouraging us to use scented deodorant, laundry detergents or now we can add scent in the dryer with dryer beads designed to add additional scent to clothing, or in the washer or both for extra scent. Apparently, we need scent!

These beads typically contain a variety of chemicals. The beads themselves are usually made of polymer plastic and to help the beads dissolve surfactants and solvents are added. Then to extend the shelf life of the beads and maintain the fragrance preservatives and other stabilizers are added.

The question is are the scented beads toxic?  Answer, yes, to you and your pets and the environment. The beads contribute to air pollution as the beads are often from petrochemicals. The beads made of plastic do not all dissolve and often go down the drain and into the water system. These products weaken your clothing.

Avoid using natural fragrance oil, biodegradable polymers and plant-based surfactants, avoid products that stage they have phthalates, parabens, synthetic dyes which can be harmful.

But what is all the fuse about, you can make your own natural scents by making

  • 2 cups Epsom salt
  • 10 drops of essential oil of rosemary
  • 10 drops of essential oil of cedar wood
  • 10 drops of lemon

Mix this in a class jar and shake or work it inside a bag or bowl first to work the oil into the salt

Add 1/2 cup baking soda mix that around mix together and place in a glass jar, add to your washing machine using 1 to 2 tablespoons with each load.  It should last one year.
