There are many nutrients that are effective in enhancing MT Function and limiting Pyrrole. Some of these nutrients are digestive enzymes, probiotics, trace minerals and essential fatty acids are often helpful.   First though it is recommended to contact a health care professional.  A part of the treatment that is important is the removal of excess copper and toxic metals, then followed by long-term maintenance using zinc therapy.

What is it zinc all about?  It elevates levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the areas of our brain that control our emotions.  When zinc is in low supply, BDNF levels drops, and so does our mood.

The body needs only a little, but the mineral does a lot.  Zinc helps to manage dopamine which is important for memory and focus.  Studies show that zinc improves focus and reduces impulsivity in kids with ADHD.  A deficiency increases depression, increased anxiety, irritability, emotional instability, and induced deficits in social behaviour.

We know that proper maintenance of zinc status can help to stabilize serum cortisol levels over time and since intake has been shown to temporarily inhibit cortisol secretions.  However, in turn prolonged stress will deplete zinc concentrations in the blood.  Zinc is very calming and sedating, as it enhances gamma-amino uteri’s acid (GABA) activity in the brain which assists with neurotransmitter for the central nervous system.  Zinc maintains health in the body’s nervous system, especially looking after the vagus nerve, which connects the brain to the body.

Zinc can be found in food sources such as chicken and red meat but also seafood with oysters containing more zinc per serving than any other food.  Eggs and dairy products contain zinc as well.  There are fruit rich in zinc with pomegranate and raspberries being the best value.

I hope this started some thinking about how important it is to think about what you are eating!
