There are several different types of brain waves, 4 to be exact, alpha, beta, theta and delta. Each are associated with a specific mental state. In this blog and subsequent blogs I am going to talk about each and give each equal time.
Alpha waves are considered the relaxation waves, they occur when you are relaxed, daydreaming or in a meditative resting state. The brain waves are measured in hertz (Hz) and can be detected through an electroencephalogram (EEG). Alpha is 8-12 Hertz.
A good healthy alpha production promotes mental resourcefulness, aids in the ability to mentally coordinate, enhance overall sense of relaxation and fatigue. It is important to note that in this state you can move quickly and efficiently to accomplish whatever task is at hand. Alpha appears to bridge the gap between consciousness and subconscious.
The alpha waves are present in most adults and start presenting around when people are 13 years old so no wonder those 2 year olds can keep ongoing forever. Alpha though is a marker for alertness and sleep and has been linked to extroverts having more presenting alpha than introverts. Creativity is linked to Alpha and tests show that when listening and coming to a solution for creative problems, alpha is present. When Alpha is in the normal range we tend to feel good and have good moods and have a sense of calmness. We all need more of that.
Alpha is one of the most significant and important frequency in relationship to learning and using information. You can increase your Alpha by closing your eyes or deep breathing or decrease Alpha by thinking or calculating. Alpha frequency allows us to shift easily from one task to another. I hope this explains why meditation and breathing work to calm and balance us.
